What Can I Do to Treat Pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis, or more commonly known as a sore throat, can result from numerous illnesses. Because a patient with a sore throat is often dealing with a viral or bacterial illness, it is likely that they are suffering from the frustration of a cough as well. A cough causes an already sore throat to become even more painful. 2.4 million emergency room visits every year are a result of throat related complaints. Although, generally not a reason to panic, a sore throat can indicate a more serious problem. Before patients rush to the emergency department, efforts should be made to alleviate symptoms at home. Here is a look at what patients can do to treat pharyngitis.

Anti-Inflammatories

Drugs such as naproxen or ibuprofen are over the counter medications that reduce inflammation and may help ease your symptoms. Ask your doctor if these types of medications are recommended in your case.
